We will tour the volcanic stone quarries, transporting us to the origins and the way in which the historic center of the city of Arequipa was built.
We will visit the enigmatic Culebrillas Ravine, an imposing virgin quarry on a narrow path formed by the erosion of water and wind over time. In addition to experiencing sensations of majesty and mystery, we can find petroglyphs.
We will also visit quarries in current exploitation and we will observe live the ancestral process of extraction of larger blocks and carving of the ashlar that the stonemasons make with simple tools such as the barreta, the comba and the chisel. We will be amazed to see how laborious teachers carve into a cliff the frontis of the church of the Society of Jesus, demonstrating singular skill and dexterity.
Sillar Route (Google Map)
I recently took a trip to Arequipa and had the pleasure of visiting the Sillar route. It was a truly remarkable experience. The views are simply stunning. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before. From the top, you can see the beautiful valleys, mountains, and rivers that surround the area.
